Cafes, hospitality and retail
Most of the job is the shift somebody cannot do any more.
For whoever writes the roster and pays the staff — usually the same person.
Torvi is not a point-of-sale system and does not read your till. It rosters people, records the hours and hands them to whatever you pay with.
What gets in the way
- The roster changes on a group chatA swap is agreed in a message thread and the printed roster is already wrong.
- Hours are guessed on MondayNobody wrote down what time anybody actually started.
- Casuals, students and availabilityWho can work Saturday changes every month, and it is kept in somebody’s head.
- The pay run is a retyping exerciseThe hours are typed again into something else.
A week at Pepperbox Coffee
Pepperbox Coffee is invented for this page — an invented cafe with two shops and nineteen casual staff. Every business and person named on this site is fictional, and so is the data in the pictures.
- MondayThe owner builds the week for both shops, copies last week where nothing changed, and leaves Saturday morning open.
- TuesdayPublished. Everybody sees their shifts on their phone, and the open Saturday shift can be claimed by whoever is able to work it.
- WednesdayA barista records their availability for the month, so the next roster is built around what is actually possible.
- SaturdayStaff clock on at the shop, checked against its position if the owner has asked for that. The hours on the timesheet are the hours that were worked.
- Monday againThe owner approves the week’s timesheets and exports them as a CSV for the pay run.
What they use
- TorviThe roster, open shifts, availability, clocking on and timesheets.
- The staff appWhere your staff actually look at it.
